Samothrace

Samothrace, the island of Aeolus according to mythology, is located in the Thracian Sea and exudes an enigmatic air. Its rare natural beauty alternates between dense vegetation with ancient plane trees, ferns and herbs and the wild, rocky scenery. At the center, is Mount Saos with an altitude of over 1600 meters.

Waterfall

History

According to Homer, the god Poseidon watched the progress of the Trojan War from here.

Also, the Kavirian Mysteries were celebrated on the island, where everyone was accepted, without any distinction of gender, class, nationality, or religion, with the fundamental purpose of the moral development of people.

While it is also of particular importance for Orthodoxy as it is the first European territory visited by the Apostle Paul in 49 AD on his way to Macedonia.

The island

The capital of the island is Chora, which has been declared a preserved settlement and is built amphitheatrically on the southeastern slopes of Mount Saos.

The local gastronomic tradition is based on the famous wild goats that graze freely on the island and drink water from the sea and this is the secret that makes the meat so delicious.

Beaches & Vathres

It has beaches that are renowned for their untamed beauty. However, even more famous are the island's natural swimming pools. The waters of the streams that descend from the mountain pour from waterfalls into small lakes-pools, which the locals call "vathres" and there are about 100 in number throughout the island. The impressive streams and waterfalls are, after all, the island's trademark.

Even visitors seem to show a particular preference for the pedestals due to their uniqueness, natural beauty, and cold waters.

Adventurer

What to do

It is an ideal choice for those who love adventure and alternative holidays, away from crowded beaches and luxury hotels.

Samothrace is famous for mountain tourism, that is, activities involving outdoor sports related to the mountain that dominates the island and attracts those who desire alternative forms of tourism.

Some of these activities are climbing Saos, crossing canyons, mountaineering, mountain biking, paragliding, climbing, rafting, canoe kayaking and diving.
